Bulbophyllum (Cirrhopetalum) longissimum successful flowering
6 November 2015
Exactly this time last year, I was gutted when the spike that this plant gave out suddenly collapsed before it was fully open (see this link under October 2014). So this year when I saw a spike appearing, I was overjoyed. Even more overjoyed when I notice another one appearing at the same time!

Dendrobium Spectabile - touch & go
I bought two of these at the Flower Show early this year - one larger specimen and one smaller, immature one. Unfortunately, I didn't really understand these plants very well and hung the larger one up, exposing it to cold and windy weather thinking it would like the light. Worried that it might dry out too much, I also kept watering it... now I realise I was probably supposed to just ignore it and let it rest over the cooler period. Sadly therefore, the roots rotted and I didn't realise for many months till I took it out to repot it!
Finding the roots were very rotten sometime in June, I decided to try a modified version of "spag and bag" method I had heard off - I suspended it in an empty plastic container with some moss and pebbles at the bottom. The moss to keep the environment in the container humid (it's SO windy on our balcony) and the pebbles to weigh it down so it didn't get blown down with each puff of wind!
I'm glad to report that it hasn't died and there is some new growth appearing... I just removed all the old roots which were dried out as I was a bit worried they might get in the way of the new growth. I also split the section with new growth off from the other section in the hope that it might fare better.
The section with new roots and what looks like 2 new pseudobulbs |
The section with no new growth |
The 2 sections were originally one plant but I decided to separate them |
I was a bit worried that the new roots were drying out too much after removing the old roots though and now I have put it in a pot with bark and clay pellets but I'm also worried that that will be too damp!
"Whatever the type (of dendrobium), it is important that when the season's growth is complete, water should be withheld. Plants that are watered while resting face the danger of losing their domant root system of suffering damage to the eyes at the base of the plant; this will in turn upset future growth as the potential flower buds along the stem will produce small plantlets, known as keikis, instead of flowers..... To prevent the keikis from growing, the plants must be kept dry in winter."
Wish I had known this early - it would have saved a number of dendrobiums I have killed!
New growth on dendrobium
Very surprised and excited about the new growth on the pink and white dendrobium - a new spike AND a new pseudobulb! I had originally put this in a decorative glazed clay pot after the flowers had died but heard from others that their similar dendrobiums had rotting roots so I transferred it again a few weeks ago into a plastic pot with more drainage below.

August purchases
Christensonia Vietnamica
Another orchid with green flowers which I find so refreshing! Culture information here.Summer successes
My experiment with taking some of the other Vanda plantlets out of media seems to have done well.
Aerides
The roots have grown significantly on this one but I can't help but wonder if I should be putting them back into some loose media as they don't look like they "belong" exposedAerides |

Ravages of summer
Spending nearly a month away was a great break from the summer heat here but sadly I returned for find quite a number of my orchids had not survived.

Another New Dendrobium
Couldn't resist getting this because of the unusual yellow and purple combination - the common version being the white and purple/pink...

Nearly dead Dendrobium
Got this dendrobium from HOLF probably more than a year ago and it flourished at first but then was attacked by some bug and it has been a struggle to keep it going ever since. I think I also over-watered it (argh, when will I learn!). Decided to take it out from all it's medium (it was growing in clay pebbles) and see what happened since it was on it's last legs anyway...
Glad to report it is starting to produce a few keikis! Last ditch attempt to perpetuate itself...
Vanda seedling terrarium
As the balcony is rather windy and the weather has been rather hot, I decided to see if it might be better for these seedlings to have a bit more protection from the wind and be in a more humid environment. Created this mini-terrarium for them. Let's see how they progress...

Vandaecous orchids progress - new roots!
As mentioned in my previous post, I bravely took all my vanda-type orchids out of their medium and left their roots to air. I have been spraying them very frequently - sometimes twice a day as it has not only been hot but very windy. Thankfully the humidity has also been quite high so this has helped.
I'm glad to report that new roots are appearing and this is great as that's the first sign that they are going to thrive... I think!

Zygopetalums blooming again!
So after splitting the original plant into 3 because it was very root bound, two of the new plants immediately produced spikes from the new growth. The first has now opened and as expected, the colour is a little less intense than the previous one. I am also surprised that it seem the petals/sepals are also large in size.
It's very hard to do the beauty of the orchid justice because the shade of purple is infuriatingly difficult to capture accurately (it's more blue than in the photos) and the flowers seem to be rather haphazardly angled! Also, the texture of the lip - like velvet - is not clear from the photos. Here are a few of the best ones from the many I took!

Dendrobium Unicum flowering
The first flower has opened! The lip is slightly asymmetrical but otherwise it is so gorgeous - the bright orange colour, the very fine-lined lip and it's sculptural form. So thrilled about this plant especially because I didn't think it would actually survive after buying it - see previous post here! It also lost a few of the buds along the way so I was wondering if any would reach full maturity.
The flower seems to be growing upside down, which makes me think that I should mount it hanging downwards |
Vandeaeous orchids experiment
I have known for a long time that Vanda orchids grow with their roots totally exposed and trailing out of the baskets... but it took actually buying a gorgeous, full sized Vanda, to then motivate me to read up about them and understand them better. It turns out that there are different types of Vandas - strap-leaf, terete and semi-terete. Here are some useful resources:
- General information - American Orchid Society
- Types of Vandas and their different requirements

Dendrobium Unicum Spike development
So the spikes have grown but sadly I think it was in the direct sun too much and so some of the flower buds from each spike dried up. :(. Thankfully it seems that there are a few of the buds which are continuing to develop. Hopefully at least one will actually flower! It's quite hard to tell if the buds are dying or just changing colour towards the orange of the flower.

Spoils from the Flower Market
May 2015. Asked my family to let me buy my own presents (orchids, naturally!) this year so I finally had a shopping trip to the Prince Edward Flower Market to get my stash! Here's what I got:
I love the unique colours and shapes of this dendrobium! I had seen this species in the Singapore Botanical Gardens orchid garden before - the unique twisted petals are so unusual. I particularly like this one too because of the purplish details on the lip and I like the combination of colours with the greyish brown on the petals. Very special. Got it at a reduced price too because the flowers were beginning to drop... a great buy overall - now to hopefully keep it alive!

Visit to Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Gardens
Late April 2015.
A bit late in Spring for a visit but still had a enjoyable time checking out the flora and more importantly, the orchids... (Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Gardens)

Bulbophyllum-Cirrhopetalums
Mid April 2015. After years of not flowering, this Bulbo has now produced about 8-10 spikes! Here are the 4 latest ones...

Vandas
Mid April 2015. Finally took out the last baby Vanda (Ms Joaquim) from its sealed container and am nursing all the babies together...
As its been quite blustery, I've created a mini-greenhouse protector for when its particularly windy and for night time...
The 2 babies which I had out before have produced tiny new leaves and roots so I hope this means they are reasonably happy...
Dendrobium Unicum
April 2015. I had very little expectations for this plant especially when its leaves started to drop but it has surprised me and started to put out what I think are spikes at the nodes of the pseudobulb/stem.
Maxillaria
Mid April 2015. So after much anticipation over the NoID maxi, it finally flowered and it turns out to be a Tenufloria as well! I find this totally intriguing as it has a completely different growing habit to the other one, has had very similar treatment and conditions and yet it has only now decided to bloom!
It has a much denser arrangement of the PBs - so dense that there is barely any space for the flowers...
The other Tenufloria, on the other hand, has much "looser" growth, with almost stem-like projections... It has a profusion of buds emerging now!
One things for sure, when all those buds open, the flat is going to have a strong smell of coconut!!

Zygopetalum
April 2015. The plant was beginning to overflow out of its pot so I decided to repot it. Found it was completely root bound so decided to split the plant into 3.
I was a bit worried that I had been too heavy handed with the removal of the roots and splitting the plants but I'm now very surprised to find that the new shoots seem to be sending out spikes. Not sure if that is a good thing or not!

Gastrochilus hainanensis
Early April 2015. The blooms are now fully opened and I managed to use the pano setting to capture the all the flowers in one shot.

Phalaenopsis Orchids in spike
Late April 2015. The pink Phal has finally opened its first flower!
It seems like all the spikes are taking a long time mature - perhaps because the weather has actually remianed quite cool.
The colour of this Phal varies quite a lot (probably due to the temperature). This is a picture of the flowers from 2 years ago - very different colouring!
My large pink Phal which has survived a number of years with me and has always produced amazing multi-branched spikes, nearly died last year partly because I didn't repot it soon enough (I think) and partly due to damp rot. But it seems to have bounced back very quickly and has just rewarded me with a lovely new strong spike...
Large Pink Phal with one spike - has recovered extremely well from nearly dying last year |
One of 2 yellow phals in spike |
Small (Taiwanese?) pink Phal with one small spike |
Two spikes on this one - Don't remember what colour this one is - possibly white |
